Financial Planning and Investment Management

Do any systems of Financial Planning and Investment Management really work? Or is the financial deck so stacked against the average investor that futility and discouragement are the long-term norm?

The longest bull market stampede in the history of the U.S. stock market took place from 1984 to 2002. During that period, the general market index returned 12.2% per year (Bottom Line Tomorrow, January 2004). However, as great as that sounds, a leading research firm analyzed the same bull market period with respect to individual investors and determined that "the average investor earned only 2.6% annually, even less than the inflation rate of 3.1%" (Dalbar, Inc.).

Don’t you see a real problem with those facts?

When we consider traditional financial planning and investment management over the last decade, it seems we're forced to issue a pretty bad report card. If we just consider the inflation effect, the average American investor went backwards during the greatest bull market run in American history! When we factor in taxes, commissions, and other expenses related to investing, the numbers get really depressing!

"Investors 'chase performance' by buying the best-performing investments of the past few months - after their hot run is over. Then when they find themselves in a low performing investment, they do it again. And with each switch, they incur extra expenses." (Dalbar)

Financial Planning and Investment Management

And guess what? It's the professional brokers, planners, and timers that are complicit in this futile approach to financial planning and investment management! Have you ever examined who's pitching the products after the insiders have already jumped in? Have you ever wondered why traditional investors get in and out of these products too late?

How do insiders consistently achieve far greater levels of wealth than us traditional investors anyway?

Well, when we do some self-reflection, it seems we've made our financial lives an afterthought. We've been sold a product-oriented accumulation strategy inside the passive world of qualified retirement plans. We bury our heads in the sand as interest, taxes, inflation, expenses, and opportunity costs suck the life out of our long-term balance sheet. We quietly toss our monthly account statements in the trash as our financial strategists "time" the market and adjust the products in our portfolios accordingly.

While insiders actively pursue their financial dreams, many traditional investors have gone totally passive.
